AMD Threadripper Pro has 64 cores, 128 PCIe lanes and 8-channel memory support

AMD Threadripper Pro CPUs are coming to take down Intel’s Xeon workstation chips, offering up to 64 cores, 128 threads, 128 lanes of PCIe Gen 4, and up to 2TB of RAM.

The company announced four Threadripper Pro chips:

  • Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3995WX with 64 cores, 128 threads, and a base clock of 2.7GHz and boost clock of 4.2GHz
  • Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3975WX with 32 cores, 64 threads, and a base clock of 3.5GHz and boost clock of 4.2GHz
  • Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3955XWX with 16 cores, 32 threads, and a base clock of 3.9GHz and boost clock of 4.3GHz
  • Ryzen Threadripper Pro 3945WX with 12 cores, 24 threads, and a base clock of 4GHz and boost clock of 4.3GHz.

All four chips feature the same ludicrous amount of 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, rated 280-Watt TDP, and the ability to run up to 2TB of RAM in 8-channel mode supporting unbuffered DIMMS, registered DIMMS, and Load Reduced DIMMs.

AMD officials said the 64-core version will be built with eight CCD units, each packing eight cores. The 32-core version will feature four 8-core CCDs. Finally, the 16-core variant will use two 8-core CCDs, and the 12-core version will feature two 6-core CCDs. All will feature AMD’s IO chip design, which connects the CPU cores via Infinity Fabric to an in-package chip that has the memory controller, PCIe and other I/O functionality.

AMD’s Threadripper Pro offers higher clock, lower core density models, or high density but lower lock models.

The new CPUs are introduced with a new sWRX8 socket, which had been hinted to be featured in the original 3rd-gen Threadripper launch last November. For those used to the prosumer Threadripper, the new Pro version will address the bandwidth limitations of the original with its 8-channel memory. And for someone, somewhere who needed even more PCIe 4.0, the TR Pro will offer it.

Threadripper Pro: Lenovo Exclusive

AMD said Lenovo will be the exclusive provider of the Threadripper Pro initially with its ThinkStation P620 workstation. The P620 will offer up to two Nvidia Quadro RTX 8000 cards, 10-Gigabit ethernet, a maximum installed memory of 512GB of DDR4/3200, and a 1,000-watt power supply. Four M.2 slots and up to four 3.5-inch drive bays are supported in the chassis.

Lenovo’s ThinkStation P620 will be the exclusive provider of Threadripper Pro CPUs initially.

Lenovo said the efficient 7nm Threadripper Pro allows it to run just air cooling rather than resort to liquid cooling. For OSes, Lenovo will offer Windows 10 Pro initially and Unbuntu Linux a month later. Red Hat Enterprise Linux and possibly Debiant will come pre-loaded shortly after launch, Lenovo officials said.

AMD officials said once Lenovo’s exclusive deal ends, other OEMs and smaller system integrator PC builders will also offer Threadripper Pro-based workstations.
