Krishna Janmashtami 2020: Significance, Puja Muhurat & Dates
Janmashtami is a grand festival celebrated all over India to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna, who is believed to be the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This year Janmashtami Or Gokulashtami falls on 11th August. Sri Krishna is considered as one of the most powerful human incarnations of the Lord Vishnu. He was born around 5,200 years ago in Mathura.
Significance of Janmashtami:
Krishna was born in Mathura. His mother was Queen Devaki and his father was King Vasudeva. At Devaki’s wedding, according to Puranic legends, Kansa is told by fortune tellers that a child of Devaki would kill him. Kansa arranges to kill all of Devaki’s children. Vasudeva secretly carries the infant Krishna away across the Yamuna and exchanges him. Kansa tries to kill the newborn but the exchanged baby appears as the Hindu goddess Durga and warning him that his death has arrived in his kingdom. After that, she disappears. Krishna grows up with Nanda and his wife Yashoda in Mathura. Two of Krishna’s siblings also survive, namely Balarama and Subhadra. The day of birth of Krishna is celebrated as Krishna Janmashtami.
This year Krishna Janmashtami falls on Tuesday, August 11. Pots of milk are hung from tall poles in the streets, and men form human pyramids to reach and break the pots—this in imitation of Krishna’s childhood play with the cowherd boys when they stole the curds hung out of reach by their mothers. People also visit Krishna or Vishnu temples, and each and every Hindu household celebrates the day with great pomp making sweets, fasting, singing, and praying together.
