What to check
A hash is one way. You cannot turn the digest back into the original text. MD5 and SHA-1 are weak for security.
Which hash should I use for a password?
Do not hash a password in the browser for storage. Use a slow password hash on the server. SHA-256 is a better checksum than MD5.
Is a hash the same as encryption?
No. Encryption can be reversed with a key. A hash cannot.
