Nvidia\u2019s next-gen GeForce RTX 3080 is here (with the RTX 3070 and 3090 coming soon), and it basically turns all GPUs that came before it into the walking dead\u2014graphics cards that aren&#8217;t worth buying unless they\u2019re deeply discounted.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong: These are all still great graphics cards if you already own one. But if you bought any of the seven last-gen GPUs listed below right <em>now<\/em>,\u00a0<em>without<\/em> a substantial discount that takes the value of RTX 30-series graphics cards into account, you\u2019d be the sucker that retailers are hoping to find.\u00a0Let\u2019s get you smart so that doesn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"emo emo-sb\">\n<h6 class=\"nav-title\">Mentioned in this article<\/h6>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Nvidia\u2019s new GPUs effectively shift performance tiers down\u00a0<em>two<\/em> slots at the same price. Last generation\u2019s high-end GeForce RTX 2080 Ti cost $1,200. Nvidia says the $500 GeForce RTX 3070 coming on October 15 will be just as fast for well under half the cost, and the $700 RTX 3080 available (theoretically) now is roughly 30 percent <em>faster<\/em> than the former flagship. Compared to its direct predecessor, the RTX 2080, the RTX 3080 delivers <em>60 to 80 percent<\/em> more performance for the same price.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ru19MEEijiY\" width=\"1134\" height=\"638\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>We\u2019ll need to wait for RTX 3070 and 3090 reviews before officially passing judgment, but the GeForce RTX 3080 makes clear that Nvidia\u2019s new Ampere GPU architecture has turned several once-compelling graphics cards into shambling zombies practically overnight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The graphics cards listed below are still being sold, but you don\u2019t want to buy them anymore. On to the cards you\u00a0<em>shouldn\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0buy unless you find them at spectacular discounts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$1,200 GeForce RTX 2080 Ti<\/li>\n<li>$700 GeForce RTX 2080 Super<\/li>\n<li>$700 GeForce RTX 2080<\/li>\n<li>$500 GeForce RTX 2070 Super<\/li>\n<li>$500 GeForce RTX 2070<\/li>\n<li>$400 GeForce RTX 2060 Super<\/li>\n<li>$400 Radeon RX 5700 XT<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s a big list. Nvidia\u2019s new graphics offerings upset the entire high-end market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2019\/07\/dsc00541-100800818-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"dsc00541\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-imageid=\"100800818\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2019\/07\/dsc00541-100800818-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Brad Chacos\/IDG<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>RIP, shiny RTX Super GPUs.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I almost didn\u2019t include the vanilla RTX 20-series cards because the RTX Super refresh already rendered them obsolete last year, but I could still find several models being sold for their full MSRP (or more, in the case of custom cards) at various retailers. Listen: You shouldn\u2019t buy the original RTX 2080 when you could buy the faster RTX 2080 Super at the same price. You <em>definitely<\/em> shouldn\u2019t spend $700 on an original RTX 2080 when you could get the ludicrously fast RTX 3080 at the same cost.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone tablet desktop\" id=\"\"\/>\n<p>Likewise, you wouldn\u2019t want to spend $500 on a GeForce RTX 2070 when Nvidia says the RTX 3070 will deliver 2080 Ti-toppling performance for that price. And spending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newegg.com\/p\/pl?N=100007709%20601321492&amp;Order=1\" rel=\"nofollow\">$1,100 or more on a RTX 2080 Ti<\/a> right now would be insane. We\u2019ve seen some retailers slash a few hundred dollars off the RTX 2080 Ti\u2019s cost after Nvidia announced the RTX 30-series, but I wouldn\u2019t spend more than $500 or $550 on one, even though the RTX 3070 is yet to be reviewed. And I\u2019d only consider paying <em>that<\/em> because the RTX 2080 Ti has 3GB more of onboard memory.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"emo emo-sb\">\n<h6 class=\"nav-title\">A great custom RTX 3080<\/h6>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Stepping down yet another tier, the $400 GeForce RTX 2060 Super and Radeon RX 5700 XT haven\u2019t officially been replaced\u2014yet. But if you paid $400 for one of those now, it would hurt when the GeForce RTX 3070 drops for $500 next month. That card is likely to be <em>over 50 percent faster<\/em> than the RTX 2060 Super, if the card indeed manages to match last-generation\u2019s RTX 2080 Ti. The Radeon offering is in a similar pickle.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d be nervous buying <em>any<\/em> last-gen graphics card right now. Expect to see more casualties of war as Nvidia fills out the rest of the RTX 30-series over the next few months, and when AMD\u2019s \u201cBig Navi\u201d Radeon RX 6000 counter-punch makes its debut in October. Be patient, though. The older GPUs flat-out don\u2019t make sense at the prices they\u2019re still being sold for. These ancient cards remain <em>expensive<\/em>, and you wouldn\u2019t want to spend $400 to $1,200 on pricey <em>last-gen<\/em> hardware now that the next generation is already here, offering significantly higher performance and\/or lower prices.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-2 tablet desktop smartphone\" id=\"\"\/>\n<p>Now you know.
