You need a pixel-packed monitor to get the most out of it, though\u2014like a 3440&#215;1440 ultrawide display.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"emo emo-sb\">\n<h6 class=\"nav-title\">Mentioned in this article<\/h6>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Our initial tests of the GeForce RTX 3080 showed it really flexing its muscles at 4K resolution, where the graphics workload is so heavy that your CPU is pretty much taken out of the equation. At 4K, the RTX 3080 performed up to a whopping <em>80 percent faster<\/em> than its RTX 2080 predecessor in some games. Stepping down to 1440p, the RTX 3080 continues to dominate, but not quite as much as at 4K, because at the lower resolution your CPU struggles to feed frames to the ultra-fast graphics card fast enough. Sure, it lacks some extra goodies found in pricier options\u2014the EDG34S comes in budget plastic casing with no adjustability features, and it lacks many software features\u2014but if you\u2019re just looking to <em>game<\/em> at a fast rate on an oh-so-immersive ultrawide screen, the Nixeus EDG34S screams. Don\u2019t let that dissuade you though. While the EDG34S lacks official G-Sync Compatible certification, you can activate G-Sync manually in Nvidia\u2019s control panel to turn on adaptive sync support for GeForce GPUs. I\u2019ve confirmed it works like a charm. (You\u2019ll need to use the monitor\u2019s on-screen display to activate adaptive sync first, however.) That makes the Nixeus EDG34S a fantastic partner for a monstrous GeForce RTX 3080 if you\u2019re planning to upgrade your display, too.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t take my word for it. Bring on the GeForce RTX 3080 3440&#215;1440 ultrawide benchmarks.<\/p>\n<h2>GeForce RTX 3080 3440&#215;1440 ultrawide benchmarks<\/h2>\n<p>We benchmarked the GeForce RTX 3080\u2019s ultrawide performance on the same system used for our primary GPU testing. We\u2019ve also enabled temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) to push these cards to their limits when it\u2019s available.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone tablet desktop\" id=\"\"\/>\n<p>We did not include the legendary GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, as our previous benchmarks show it performing on a par with the RTX 2080 in most games. It\u2019s a hair slower in properly optimized DX12 or Vulkan games, as you\u2019ll see in our full RTX 3080 review. I had to remove two games from the suite due to wonky ultrawide support, which I\u2019ll discuss at the end.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Horizon Zero Dawn<\/h3>\n<p>Yep, Sony exclusives are hitting the PC now. <em>Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em> hit Steam with some performance issues. The most egregious ones have by and large been cleared up thanks to hard work from the developers, and the game topped the sales charts for weeks after its release. It also seems to respond somewhat to PCIe 4.0 scaling, which will make this an interesting inclusion when we shift to a PCIe 4.0-based system in the future.<\/p>\n<p><em>Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em> runs on Guerrilla Games\u2019 Decima engine, the same engine that powers <em>Death Stranding<\/em>. Ambient Occlusion can still offer iffy results if set to Ultra, so we test with that setting at Medium. Every other visual option is maxed out.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-2 tablet desktop smartphone\" id=\"\"\/>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/hzd-100857382-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"hzd\" width=\"1200\" height=\"839\" data-imageid=\"100857382\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/hzd-100857382-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Brad Chacos\/IDG<\/small><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Gears Tactics<\/h3>\n<p><em>Gears Tactics<\/em> puts it own brutal, fast-paced spin on the <em>XCOM<\/em>-like genre. This Unreal Engine 4-powered game was built from the ground up for DirectX 12. We love being able to work a tactics-style game into our benchmarking suite. Better yet, the game comes with a plethora of graphics options for PC snobs. More games should devote such loving care to explaining what flipping all these visual knobs mean.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t use the presets to benchmark <em>Gears Tactics<\/em>, as it intelligently scales to work best on your installed hardware, meaning that \u201cUltra\u201d on one graphics card can load different settings than \u201cUltra\u201d on a weaker card. We manually set all options to their highest possible settings and disable frame rate minimums and maximums.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/gears-tactics-100857381-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"gears tactics\" width=\"1200\" height=\"839\" data-imageid=\"100857381\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/gears-tactics-100857381-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Brad Chacos\/IDG<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>Fun fact: The GeForce RTX 3080 FE is the <em>only<\/em> graphics card that doesn\u2019t generate a \u201cYour GPU can\u2019t handle this\u201d warning when enabling Glossy Reflections. Only the 3080 and the RTX 2080 Ti lack that warning for Planar Reflections.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Metro Exodus<\/h3>\n<p>One of the best games of 2019, <em>Metro Exodus <\/em>is one of the best-looking games around, too. The latest version of the 4A Engine provides incredibly luscious, ultra-detailed visuals, with one of the most stunning real-time ray tracing implementations released yet. We test in DirectX 12 mode with ray tracing, Hairworks, and DLSS disabled for our basic benchmarks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/metro-exodus-100857384-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"metro exodus\" width=\"1200\" height=\"839\" data-imageid=\"100857384\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/metro-exodus-100857384-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Brad Chacos\/IDG<\/small><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Strange Brigade<\/h3>\n<p><em>Strange Brigade<\/em>\u00a0is a cooperative third-person shooter where a team of adventurers blasts through hordes of mythological enemies. It\u2019s a technological showcase, built around the next-gen Vulkan and DirectX 12 technologies and infused with features like HDR support and the ability to toggle asynchronous compute on and off. It uses Rebellion\u2019s custom Azure engine. We test using the Vulkan renderer, which is faster than DX12.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/strange-brigae-100857388-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"strange brigae\" width=\"1200\" height=\"839\" data-imageid=\"100857388\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/strange-brigae-100857388-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Brad Chacos\/IDG<\/small><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Total War: Troy<\/h3>\n<p>The latest game in the popular <em>Total War<\/em> saga, <em>Troy <\/em>was given away free for its first 24 hours on the Epic Games Store, moving over 7.5 million copies before it went on proper sale. <em>Total War: Troy<\/em> is built using a modified version of the <em>Total War: Warhammer 2<\/em> engine, and this DX11 title looks stunning for a turn-based strategy game.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/total-war-troy-100857389-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"total war troy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"839\" data-imageid=\"100857389\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/total-war-troy-100857389-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Brad Chacos\/IDG<\/small><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Shadow of the Tomb Raider<\/h3>\n<p><em>Shadow of the Tomb Raider<\/em>\u00a0concludes the reboot trilogy, and it\u2019s utterly\u00a0<em>gorgeous<\/em>. Square Enix optimized this game for DX12, and recommends DX11 only if you\u2019re using older hardware or Windows 7, so we test with DX12.\u00a0<em>Shadow of the Tomb Raider<\/em>\u00a0uses an enhanced version of the Foundation engine that also powered\u00a0<em>Rise of the Tomb Raider<\/em> and includes optional real-time ray tracing and DLSS features.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/sotr-100857387-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"sotr\" width=\"1200\" height=\"839\" data-imageid=\"100857387\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/sotr-100857387-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Brad Chacos\/IDG<\/small><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"body\">GTA V<\/h3>\n<p>This DX11 game that isn\u2019t really a visual barn-burner like the (somewhat wonky) <em>Red Dead Redemption 2<\/em>, but still tops the Steam charts day in and day out, so we deem it more worthy of testing. <em>RDR2 <\/em>will melt your graphics card, sure, but <em>GTA V <\/em>remains so popular years after launch that upgraded versions of it will be available on the next-generation consoles. That\u2019s staying power.<\/p>\n<p>We test\u00a0<em>Grand Theft Auto V<\/em>\u00a0with all options turned to Very High, all Advanced Graphics options except extended shadows enabled, and FXAA.\u00a0<em>GTA V\u00a0<\/em>runs on the RAGE engine and has received substantial updates since its initial launch.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/gtav-100857383-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"gtav\" width=\"1200\" height=\"839\" data-imageid=\"100857383\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/gtav-100857383-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Brad Chacos\/IDG<\/small><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Rainbow Six Siege<\/h3>\n<p>Like <em>GTA V<\/em>, Ubisoft\u2019s <em>Rainbow Six Siege<\/em> still dominates the Steam charts years after its launch, and it\u2019ll be getting a visual upgrade for the next-gen consoles. The developers have poured a ton of work into the game\u2019s AnvilNext engine over the years, eventually rolling out a Vulkan version of the game that we use to test. By default, the game lowers the render scaling to increase frame rates, but we set it to 100 percent to benchmark native rendering performance on graphics cards. Even still, frame rates soar.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/rb6-100857385-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"rb6\" width=\"1200\" height=\"839\" data-imageid=\"100857385\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/rb6-100857385-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Brad Chacos\/IDG<\/small><\/figure>\n<h2>Final thoughts and analysis<\/h2>\n<p>After benchmarking the GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition at 3440&#215;1440 in eight games, it winds up being roughly 50 to 70 percent faster than its direct predecessor, the GeForce RTX 2080. Nvidia\u2019s new flagship also beats on the previous-gen $1,200 RTX 2080 Ti flagship by roughly 15 to 30 percent at ultrawide resolution, despite costing $500 less. The only exception is <em>GTA V<\/em>, but that\u2019s because the GeForce RTX 3080 is so powerful it\u2019s pushing the engine\u2019s limits even at this lofty resolution. If you\u2019re still using a GTX 1080, it\u2019s a titanic upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>Yep, the GeForce RTX 3080 absolutely <em>flies <\/em>at 3440&#215;1440. Those leads are less than what the GeForce RTX 3080 accomplishes at pure 4K resolution, but lower margins of victory are to be expected at this resolution because it\u2019s more prone to becoming somewhat CPU-bound. This is still a resounding win.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/geforce-rtx-3080-3-100857395-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"geforce rtx 3080 3\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-imageid=\"100857395\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/geforce-rtx-3080-3-100857395-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Brad Chacos\/IDG<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>Testing the GeForce RTX 3080 at 3440&#215;1440 also reopened my eyes to the majesty of a high-refresh rate ultrawide display. My primary monitor is a 4K, 144Hz G-Sync display and it\u2019s absolutely glorious, but benchmarking on the Nixeus EDG34S just felt <em>immersive<\/em> in a way that you can\u2019t get on a standard panel. The wide-reaching screen engulfs your field of view in a delightful way, and the gentle curve that Nixeus used on the EDG34S only magnifies the effect.<\/p>\n<p>That said, testing at this resolution also showed some of the rough edges present with ultrawide gaming. We had to nix <em>Borderlands 3<\/em> and <em>F1 2020<\/em> from our testing suite because neither game played well with this panel. <em>Borderlands<\/em> supports several ultrawide resolutions, but not 3440&#215;1440. <em>F1 2020<\/em>, meanwhile, ostensibly includes a 3440&#215;1440 setting, but I couldn\u2019t make it stick. Selecting it made the game default to a 4K \u201c3840&#215;2160 (Custom)\u201d resolution instead. It <em>looks<\/em> like proper ultrawide in-game, but the actual performance wound up actually being <em>worse<\/em> than what we saw at proper 4K for some reason.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vVqfuvUGPZU\" width=\"1193\" height=\"671\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Ultrawide monitors are gaining in popularity, but support can still be iffy for the relatively niche resolution.
