It delivered.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Intel surprised us by promising that its new SuperFIN transistor would push Tiger Lake to a greater-than-generational improvement in CPU performance. While that claim will have to wait for actual testing, the numbers help bolster its case: The base clock speed of the top four-core, eight-thread Core i7-1185G7 reaches 3GHz\u2014far above that of Intel&#8217;s flagship 10th-gen Ice Lake chips\u2014with single-core turbo speeds hitting 4.8GHz.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All told, Intel is launching nine new Tiger Lake processors for notebooks, five of which include the new Xe integrated graphics core.\u00a0More than 150 designs based on the new 11th-gen Intel Core processors are expected from partners including Acer, Asus, Dell, Dynabook, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI, Razer, Samsung and others, Intel says. Twenty will be \u201cIntel Evo\u201d notebooks, the new name for Intel\u2019s ongoing Project Athena lineup of collaboratively designed premium notebook PCs.<\/p>\n<p>Intel\u2019s making ambitious performance claims, including that Tiger Lake is 2.7 times as fast as \u201ccompetitive products\u201d in video editing, and that it can add an hour or so of battery compared to Ice Lake.\u00a0Keep in mind, however, that the current landscape favors AMD\u2019s mobile Ryzen, especially notebook processors like the 8-core, 16-thread Ryzen Mobile 4800U that easily compete with Intel\u2019s 10th-gen \u201cIce Lake\u201d H-series processors for gaming laptops. Intel hasn\u2019t announced a gaming-class Tiger Lake processor yet, though it\u2019s made the case that Tiger Lake enables thin-and-light gaming performance where none existed before.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/08\/acer-swift-5_sf514-55_left-facing_win10-100856112-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"acer swift 5 sf514 55 left facing win10\" width=\"1200\" height=\"728\" data-imageid=\"100856112\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/08\/acer-swift-5_sf514-55_left-facing_win10-100856112-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Acer<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>Acer&#8217;s Swift 5 will feature Intel&#8217;s 11th gen Tiger Lake CPU and Xe graphics.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"toc\" id=\"toc-1\">Tiger Lake looks significantly faster<\/h2>\n<p>Intel has talked at length about the architectural details underlying Tiger Lake, but it\u2019s said little about the the actual clock frequencies of the chips themselves. On Wednesday, Intel unveiled them. The higher-power \u2018UP3\u2019 series of chips (previously known as the \u2018U\u2019 series mobile CPUs for laptops) will include five chips ranging from the dual-core, 3GHz Core i3-1115G4 on up to the quad-core, 3GHz Core i7-1185G7. The lower-power \u2018UP4\u2019 series chips for tablets and thin-and-light PCs (designated in prior generations with the \u2018Y\u2019 suffix) includes four processors, ranging from the 1.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i3-1110G4 up to the 1.2GHz quad-core Core i7-1160G7.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a presentation on Wednesday, Intel quietly amended its product list by saying that the Core i3-1125G4 and Core i3-1120G4 would be available in 2021.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/intel-tiger-lake-speeds-and-feeds-new-100856370-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"intel tiger lake speeds and feeds new\" width=\"1200\" height=\"825\" data-imageid=\"100856370\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/09\/intel-tiger-lake-speeds-and-feeds-new-100856370-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Intel<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>Intel\u2019s 11th-gen Tiger Lake processors for thin-and-light notebooks and tablets. It looks as if Intel may differentiate between the UP4 and UP3 chips via model number: A final \u201c0\u201d for UP4 tablet chips, and a final \u201c5\u201d for UP3 notebook processors.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Compared to\u00a0Intel\u2019s first 10th-gen Ice Lake processors, several differences stand out with Tiger Lake. Top to bottom, the base clock speeds as well as the single-core turbo speeds are all higher, even significantly in some cases. The max all-core turbo speeds are higher, too.\u00a0The closest generational comparison is Ice Lake\u2019s Core i5-1035G1 (1GHz base, 3.6GHz single-core turbo, 3.3GHz all-core turbo) and Tiger Lake\u2019s Core i3-1125G4 (2GHz base, 3.7GHz single-core turbo, 3.3GHz all-core turbo). Actual performance will vary, and will need to be established via testing.<\/p>\n<p>Intel isn\u2019t offering as much processor choice as in Ice Lake, as there are five UP3 Tiger Lake processors (versus six Ice Lake-U chips) and four UP4 Tiger Lake processors (compared to five Ice Lake Y-series chips). Intel may identify the lower-power UP4 chips with model numbers ending in zero.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone tablet desktop\" id=\"\"\/>\n<p>There\u2019s a possibly significant difference in operating power. Ice Lake\u2019s U-series chips offered a 15W nominal TDP and a 25W \u201cup\u201d TDP, allowing for higher frequencies and performance differences. The information Intel released doesn\u2019t make that distinction. Intel hasn\u2019t said whether the 12W-28W UP3 processors indicate a nominal TDP of 12W, or whether they\u2019re 15W parts with a TDP \u201cdown\u201d option of 12W. Intel could be offering laptop makers the option of buying a single processor, and running it in either an upclocked, downclocked, or nominal (stock) configuration.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/01\/intel-tiger-lake-motherboard-ces-2020-greg-bryant-resized-100826258-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"intel tiger lake motherboard ces 2020 greg bryant resized\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" data-imageid=\"100826258\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/01\/intel-tiger-lake-motherboard-ces-2020-greg-bryant-resized-100826258-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Intel<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>Last year, Intel showed a Tiger Lake motherboard at CES.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We knew a bit about Intel\u2019s plans for its Xe integrated graphics, because Intel said last month that Tiger Lake would include up to 96 EUs. That\u2019s a bump up from the 64 EUs Ice Lake offered, before any performance improvements from Intel\u2019s new Xe Core (now dubbed Iris Xe) are factored in. Graphics frequencies are higher, too. Tiger Lake\u2019s Xe GPU supports 8K\u00a0HDR displays and up to four simultaneous 4K HDR displays, as well as Dolby Vision.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Intel is not making any distinction between the graphical capabilities of processors like the Core i7-1185G7 (96EUs, 1.35GHz GPU frequency) and the Core i5-1135G7 (80EUs, 1.3GHz). Both are identified with the same G7 suffix, and both include the Intel Iris Xe branding. There will likely be some differences in graphics performance between the two that the branding and model numbers won\u2019t disclose.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, Intel\u2019s product matrix tells us that the cache sizes will vary among the different processors, affecting performance somewhat. The memory options include the same DDR4-3200 as Ice Lake had, plus a faster LPDDR4X-4266 option that Ice Lake didn\u2019t have. Tiger Lake is also Intel\u2019s first CPU line to support PCI Express Gen4. Tiger Lake notebooks will have up to four ports of Thunderbolt 4 and WiFi 6 (Gig+), too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"toc\" id=\"toc-2\">Actual performance remains unknown<\/h2>\n<p>Intel\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/3570717\/intel-promises-dramatic-clock-speed-increases-in-tiger-lake-cpu.html\">Intel Architecture Day revealed one reason why Tiger Lake represents a greater-than-generational leap in performance: its SuperFIN transistor. According to\u00a0Ruth Brain, an Intel fellow specializing in technology development and interconnects, the sum total of\u00a0<em>all<\/em>\u00a0of the intranode improvements made in the 14nm generation would be equaled by\u00a0<em>one<\/em>\u00a0intranode performance increase from Ice Lake to Tiger Lake. That\u2019s a generation\u2019s worth of \u201c++\u201d improvements, wiped off the table by the SuperFIN transistor.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/08\/slide63-100854372-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"Tiger Lake\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-imageid=\"100854372\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/08\/slide63-100854372-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Intel<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>Intel believes that Tiger Lake offers a wider range of performance-versus-power options than Ice Lake ever did.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That might help explain the greater range in Tiger Lake\u2019s operating power, too, as the \u201cWillow Cove\u201d CPU within Tiger Lake is designed for a broader range of operating power and frequency than the \u201cSunny Cove\u201d CPUs inside of Ice Lake.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For now, however, there\u2019s still a mishmash of somewhat vague performance comparisons. Intel claims that the integrated Xe core outperforms \u201c90 percent of the discrete graphics in the segment,\u201d and that the chip can play games twice as fast as the integrated Ice Lake GPU. (The latter claim is based on a comparison between the Core i7-1065G7U and the Core i7-1185G7, using <em>Gears Tactics<\/em> at 1080p, Medium settings. Intel had also made some initial performance claims about Tiger Lake last year.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Intel also says that Tiger Lake offers video editing that\u2019s twice as fast, and photo editing that&#8217;s 2.7 times as fast, compared to rival products. Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=95&amp;v=TMwQbQLaNAg&amp;feature=emb_logo\" rel=\"nofollow\">Intel released video<\/a> explaining how Tiger Lake would perform in games ranging from <em>Battlefield V<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0<em>Grid<\/em> \u2014but without frame rates to back it up. Still, being able to play\u00a0<em>Borderlands 3, Far Cry New Dawn, <\/em>and<em> Hitman 2<\/em> on integrated graphics, and on a thin-and-light PC, is noteworthy.\u00a0We&#8217;ll see if Intel can show us more about how the\u00a0Core i7-1185G7 compares to the Ryzen Mobile 4800U.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Intel began sharing some more performance metrics to try and show how Tiger Lake outstrips the competition. It\u2019s probably fair to say that until Intel announced its SuperFIN transistor, the comparison between AMD\u2019s mobile Ryzen and Intel\u2019s Tiger Lake looked pretty bad for Intel.
