\u201cKaren does really well for us,\u201d Kris Seavers, an editor for The Daily Dot<\/em>, told me. \u201cWe\u2019re always looking for the latest Karen.\u201d Seavers oversees the site\u2019s IRL section\u2014real-world incidents that can blow up online\u2014and says the site has more than 110 stories tagged \u201cKaren.\u201d New videos are fairly easy to find, she added, and they\u2019re easy page-view wins. \u201cThe more that people realize these are traffic drivers, the more there are TikTok accounts, or Twitter and Instagram accounts, pulling them as well.\u201d The same day Cuthbertson\u2019s video appeared on The Daily Dot<\/em>, it was also covered by Complex<\/em>, the New York Post<\/em>, and the Daily Mail<\/em>, and served as the inspiration for a Lifehacker<\/em> explainer about why face masks protect from the virus but not from fart smells. \u201cI\u2019m not sure how these things spread,\u201d Cuthbertson said. \u201cBut it got more and more views. Fans of the celebrity blogger Perez Hilton send him links that he posts on his personal YouTube or TikTok account, where they\u2019re seen by his millions of followers. \u201cThe best Karen videos are the ones that have a compelling and clear beginning, middle, and end,\u201d Hilton told me, with the detached tone of a film critic. \u201cIf you can get drama, ridiculousness, and explosion in 15, 30, 60 seconds, that\u2019s gold.\u201d And truly, some of the viral meltdown videos are almost artfully ridiculous. \u201cYou can\u2019t take my temperature; that\u2019s against the law,\u201d a belligerent woman in flip-flops and whimsical capri leggings rants at her dentist\u2019s receptionist in one<\/a> recent video. \u201cThis is a medical office,\u201d an offscreen voice tinged with exhaustion offers as the clip fades out. You\u2019d be hard-pressed to script a better scene.<\/p>\n Then there\u2019s the merchandise. Etsy stores have started selling Karen-related coffee mugs and stemless wine glasses. The Instagram account Keeping Up With the Karens has sold several dozen doormats that read No Karens Allowed<\/span>, and accepts donations from fans. Somebody recently gave $400. \u201cThe most popular type of Karen content is typically the ones that involve a meltdown of some sort,\u201d the owner of the account told me, requesting anonymity for fear of professional consequences. He spoke about the chore of wading through submissions, trying to decide which videos were sufficiently natural and<\/em> dramatic. Some he tosses out because they\u2019re clearly staged. \u201cI see thousands of videos a month,\u201d he said. \u201cYou start developing what I dub a \u2018K-dar\u2019 in how to distinguish a real Karen incident from a forced one.\u201d<\/p>\n The immense ecosystem of internet culture doesn\u2019t just amplify and promote these videos; it needs them.<\/p>\n By the time his video went viral, Cuthbertson wasn\u2019t sure he\u2019d done the right thing. Before signing over the video rights to an agency, he turned down a request from a local TV news station that wanted to use it, worrying that the attention would result in the woman\u2019s being identified. (So far, she hasn\u2019t been named.) \u201cYou could tell the woman was just being stupid, and we\u2019ve all done stupid things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
