But it\u2019s also packed with foundational information to help graphics enthusiasts understand just what drove the design decisions of Ampere.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZEzI02SKALY\" width=\"1193\" height=\"671\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The video leads with thermal architect David Haley, who said a GPU without cooling attached to it would heat up to about 760 degrees Celsius, which is 100 degrees hotter than the melting point of aluminum. Haley talks viewers through how cooling works in a graphics card, and then said a lot of changes had to be made for this generation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn order to achieve this perfect airflow, we had to remove the constraints we had before,\u201d Haley said. \u201cWe have to change the PCB, we have to move the fans, we have to change the software stack that\u2019s controlling the fans.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/08\/reddit_2-100855611-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"reddit 2\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" data-imageid=\"100855611\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/08\/reddit_2-100855611-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/nvidia\/comments\/gyyw9s\/rtx_3080_leak_cooling_interpretation\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Reddit<\/a> <\/small><figcaption>\n<p>On Redditor posted a rendered image of what many believe the Ampere design will look like.based on an earlier leak.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s obviously in reference to the radical look of Nvidia\u2019s next-gen GeForce graphics cards, which has already leaked. The leaks, however, didn\u2019t explain what\u2019s behind the design\u2014but it\u2019s starting to make more sense now.\u00a0Unlike most graphics cards with rectangular PCBs, the leaks of Ampere-based GeForce graphics cards appear to show a much shorter 6- to 7-inch PCB with a V-notch at the rear.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That seems to be confirmed by a reference Haley makes to the computational fluid dynamics workups the company did on airflow in a typical desktop.<\/p>\n<p>In the Nvidia video, you can see the fan closest to the back of the PC sucking air in, and exhausting it out the rear of the case\u2014very much like a typical blower style card that\u2019s good for internal case temperatures, but not so great in performance. Nvidia\u2019s video, however, shows a second fan closer to the front of the PC sucking air in and exhausting it directly up, where the the fan mounted behind the CPU will exhaust it. We suspect some air is also channeled to the rear fan as well to cool components.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a big change from a typical dual-fan blower cooler, which simply forces air in over fin stacks of a GPU and then hopes the case itself has enough raw air flow to deal with the heat generated.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone tablet desktop\" id=\"\"\/>\n<p>Haley also hints that the new card will feature a rethink of the base plate to aid, rather than hinder in cooling as well. The rendering from Nvidia\u2019s video (seen in the screenshot below) also shows a heat sink stack on the side that looks identical to the cooler design in the leaks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/08\/cfs_1-100855606-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"cfs 1\" width=\"1200\" height=\"651\" data-imageid=\"100855606\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/08\/cfs_1-100855606-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Nvidia<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>Nvidia said airflow will be critical to Ampere. You can see air coming in the front lower right quadrant of a case, and being sucked through one fan on the far left of the card with the second fan apparently using front air flow to and blowing it up and out past the CPU.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From a mechanical standpoint, Nvidia\u2019s product design V.P. Andrew Bell said engineers had to take all of their goals and \u201cdreams\u201d and come with a way to actually make them. One innovation, Bell said, is a low-profile leaf spring design that holds the cooler to the GPU core while still allowing for a backcover to fit.<\/p>\n<h2>Shorter PCB and 12-pin connector explained<\/h2>\n<p>Last to speak was Gabriele Gorla, the director of system engineering at Nvidia. Gorla said the shorter PCB required addressing crosstalk, or interference issues with the wire and power density. Gorla said to mitigate crosstalk, you typically add layers to the PCB, and you \u201chave awesome layout engineers\u201d so it\u2019s likely Ampere has more layers than previous designs.<\/p>\n<p>Gorla also directly addressed the latest buzz around the card: The new 12-pin connector, which has already been shown off by Seasonic. Leaked images of the Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3090 indicate it\u2019s a fairly huge graphics card, but the small cable connector (which is included) and small PCB means the insides will be very compact. Assuming the leaked images all prove accurate (and this video certainly suggests they will), we\u2019d guess that most of the new electrical, mechanical, and industrial design in the new GeForce cards is for one simple purpose: Cooling.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/08\/ampere-100855602-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"ampere\" width=\"1200\" height=\"654\" data-imageid=\"100855602\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/08\/ampere-100855602-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Nvidia<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>While most of the video features previous GeForce cards in it, the upcoming Ampere-based GeForce appears at the end\u00a0 The video closes with what looks to be the only view of the exterior of the card flying by the camera.
