The service lets users upload 50,000 of their own music files, then access the audio on a wide range of streaming devices. It\u2019s a great way to access your own music files from anywhere, and it doesn\u2019t cost a dime.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"emo emo-sb\">\n<h6 class=\"nav-title\">The best Google Home speaker<\/h6>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Unfortunately, the free ride is just about over. At the end of this year, Google will discontinue Google Play Music and push users over to YouTube Music as a replacement. But while YouTube Music now supports music uploads and offers an easy migration tool for Google Play Music users, the transition <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/gadgets\/2020\/06\/youtube-music-library-transfers-your-purchased-music-is-not-welcome-here\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">comes with a catch<\/a>: YouTube Music\u2019s uploads aren\u2019t playable on Google Home Speakers and Chromecast streaming dongles, at least not without paying $10 per month for a full-blown YouTube Music Premium subscription.<\/p>\n<p>In an ideal world, Google would continue supporting free playback on Google Home and Chromecast devices as a goodwill gesture to longtime users, or at least offer a cheaper upload-only subscription tier. Instead, those who have extensive MP3, FLAC, or other digital music collections will have to start considering other ways to play music via Google Cast.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/youtubemusicpayup-100852802-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"youtubemusicpayup\" width=\"1200\" height=\"884\" data-imageid=\"100852802\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/youtubemusicpayup-100852802-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Jared Newman \/ IDG<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>Google to digital music collectors: Pay up to play your own music on your Google-centric speaker systems.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Let\u2019s walk through the options for keeping the music alive on Google Home speakers after Google Play Music goes away in December.<\/p>\n<h2>First, a disclaimer<\/h2>\n<p>Before we get into the alternatives, keep in mind that none of the options below support launching music by voice via Google Home speakers. You can ask Google to pause, resume, or stop playback, but you can\u2019t select music, fast forward, or rewind. That means you\u2019ll need to use a phone, computer, or tablet to start a listening session and skip tracks.<\/p>\n<p>The good news, however, is that all the solutions I\u2019m about to describe <em>do<\/em> support multi-room audio. If you\u2019ve set up some groups in the Google Home app, you\u2019ll be able keep casting music to those groups just like before.<\/p>\n<h2>Option 1: Plex<\/h2>\n<aside class=\"emo emo-sb\">\n<h6 class=\"nav-title\">An excellent NAS box<\/h6>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Plex is a popular program for hosting media files on one device and streaming them to others. If you have a desktop computer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestbuy.com\/site\/nvidia-shield-android-tv-pro-16gb-4k-hdr-streaming-media-player-with-google-assistant-black\/6370425.p?skuId=6370425\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nvidia Shield TV Pro<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/support.plex.tv\/articles\/201373823-nas-devices-and-limitations\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">compatible NAS device<\/a>, you can install Plex\u2019s Media Server software and host your music files on it, then play the music through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plex.tv\/apps-devices\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Plex\u2019s streaming devices<\/a>. Plex\u2019s iOS, Android, and desktop web apps all support casting, so you can use them to send music to your Google Home speakers or Chromecast devices. This even works with any Google Home speaker groups you\u2019ve created.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/plexgooglehome-100852801-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"plexgooglehome\" width=\"1200\" height=\"866\" data-imageid=\"100852801\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/plexgooglehome-100852801-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Jared Newman \/ IDG<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>While it doesn\u2019t support voice commands beyond playing and stopping, Plex does let you cast to external speakers.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As for the costs, Plex\u2019s desktop web app is free to use, even with Chromecast devices, but the iOS and Android apps cost $5 each to remove playback time limitations.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone tablet desktop\" id=\"\"\/>\n<p>If you subscribe to Plex Pass, which costs $5 per month, $40 per year, or $120 for life, all of Plex\u2019s apps are free. This also unlocks some extra features, such as artist metadata, volume leveling, crossfades between tracks, and visualizations.<\/p>\n<p>The setup\u2019s a bit burdensome given the hardware involved, but it\u2019s worth the effort if you want to access your music from a wide range of streaming devices. You can access your library remotely through your server at home, and it even supports lossless audio formats such as FLAC. While not Chromecast-related, Plex supports Android Auto as well.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to get rolling:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Desktop<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-2 tablet desktop smartphone\" id=\"\"\/>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plex.tv\/media-server-downloads\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Download Plex Media Server<\/a> for your desktop computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) or NAS, then follow the installation process and hit \u201cLaunch.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Create an account if you don\u2019t have one. If you\u2019d really rather not, you can click \u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d then select \u201cSkip and accept limited functionality.<\/li>\n<li>When prompted, specify the folder where your music files are located. This will allow Plex to scan for music files and stream them to your other devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/plexsetup-100852798-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"plexsetup\" width=\"1200\" height=\"777\" data-imageid=\"100852798\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/plexsetup-100852798-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Jared Newman \/ IDG<\/small><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>To change where Plex looks for music files on your computer, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/app.plex.tv\" rel=\"nofollow\">app.plex.tv<\/a>.\u00a0Locate the \u201cMusic\u201d section in the sidebar, hit the vertical \u201c&#8230;\u201d button, then select Manage Library &gt; Edit &gt; Add folders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Nvidia Shield TV<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.plexapp.android&amp;hl=en_US\" rel=\"nofollow\">Download the regular Plex app<\/a>, which should detect your Shield and offer to install the media server. (Detailed Shield installation instructions are available on <a href=\"https:\/\/support.plex.tv\/articles\/221099988-setting-up-and-managing-plex-media-server-on-nvidia-shield\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Plex\u2019s website<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>If your music files are on an external hard drive, set up Plex to scan those files by visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/app.plex.tv\" rel=\"nofollow\">app.plex.tv<\/a>. Locate the \u201cMusic\u201d section in the sidebar, hit the vertical \u201c&#8230;\u201d button, then select Manage Library &gt; Edit &gt; Add folders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/plexlibraryedit-100852797-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"plexlibraryedit\" width=\"1200\" height=\"686\" data-imageid=\"100852797\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/plexlibraryedit-100852797-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Jared Newman \/ IDG<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>Plex\u2019s web app lets you manage your music library, even with the Shield TV.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>NAS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instructions for NAS setup vary depending on the manufacturer, but you can start by visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plex.tv\/media-server-downloads\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Plex\u2019s download page<\/a> to get the appropriate software. Be sure to read Plex\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.plex.tv\/articles\/201373823-nas-devices-and-limitations\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">devices and limitations<\/a> page as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Using Plex with Chromecast and Google Home<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"emo emo-sb\">\n<h6 class=\"nav-title\">It\u2019s not just for watching TV<\/h6>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve dealt with all that setup, using Plex is fairly easy. Just visit <a href=\"https:\/\/app.plex.tv\" rel=\"nofollow\">app.plex.tv<\/a> or download Plex\u2019s apps for <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/plex-movies-tv-music-more\/id383457673\" rel=\"nofollow\">iOS<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.plexapp.android&amp;hl=en_US\" rel=\"nofollow\">Android<\/a>, then sign in with the same account with which you set up the server. Plex should find your media server automatically, and you should see the Cast icon on the screen. Select any of your Google Home speakers, speaker groups, Chromecast devices, then choose some music to start playing.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a Plex Pass subscriber, I also suggest checking out <a href=\"https:\/\/plexamp.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Plexamp<\/a>, an excellent alternative app that\u2019s strictly focused on music instead of all media types. Chromecast support is currently in development.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/plexamp3-100852803-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"plexamp3\" width=\"1200\" height=\"739\" data-imageid=\"100852803\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/plexamp3-100852803-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Jared Newman \/ IDG<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>The Plexamp app will be an even better way to play music once it gets Chromecast support.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Option 2: Hi-Fi Cast for Android<\/h2>\n<p>For Android users who don\u2019t want to deal with all of Plex\u2019s setup, the <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.findhdmusic.app.upnpcast&amp;hl=en_US\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hi-Fi Cast app<\/a> is a fine alternative, especially if your phone has ample storage or a MicroSD card slot for holding a large music collection. The app supports gapless playback on Chromecast devices for any MP3, AAC, FLAC, and WAV Files stored on your phone, and it\u2019s free to use. (A $3-per-year or $9 one-time in-app purchase removes advertisements and unlocks Android Auto support.)<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/hificast-100852800-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"hificast\" width=\"1200\" height=\"798\" data-imageid=\"100852800\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/hificast-100852800-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Jared Newman \/ IDG<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>Hi-Fi Cast is a fine option for Chromecast and Google Home music if your phone has enough storage.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once installed, Hi-Fi Cast automatically detects all the music on your device and lets you browse by artist, album, genre, or playlist. To start casting, just hit the \u201cPlaying to this device\u201d button at the bottom, and choose your Google Home speaker, speaker group, or Chromecast from the device list.<\/p>\n<p>One other thing to consider: If you\u2019re paying for enough cloud storage to hold your MP3 collection, you might use the Autosync apps for <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.ttxapps.onesyncv2\" rel=\"nofollow\">OneDrive<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.ttxapps.dropsync\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dropbox<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.ttxapps.drivesync\" rel=\"nofollow\">Google Drive<\/a> to sync some or all of your music collection onto your phone automatically.<\/p>\n<h2>Option 3: Music Caster for Windows<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to play music from your laptop, but haven\u2019t set up a Plex server, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/elibroftw\/music-caster\" rel=\"nofollow\">Music Caster<\/a>\u00a0can help. It has its own music player, it supports casting to individual speakers or groups, and it works without issue in my experience. <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/elibroftw\/music-caster\/releases\/tag\/v4.58.0\" rel=\"nofollow\">Head to the download page<\/a>, select the \u201cPortable.zip\u201d option, then extract it anywhere on your computer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/musiccaster-100852799-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"musiccaster\" width=\"1200\" height=\"655\" data-imageid=\"100852799\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/musiccaster-100852799-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Jared Newman \/ IDG<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>Now, open Music Caster.exe, and you should see a white Cast button in taskbar. Double-click the icon to open the music player, or right-click and highlight \u201cSelect Device\u201d to choose your speakers or Chromecast devices from the list.<\/p>\n<p>With any luck, Google will see the light and provide a way for YouTube Music users to keep casting their own record collections.
