{"id":5800,"date":"2020-07-30T19:07:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-30T19:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aviancetechnologies.com\/blog\/blog\/dell-quietly-fixes-charging-issues-with-some-xps-17-9700-laptops\/"},"modified":"2020-07-30T19:07:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-30T19:07:00","slug":"dell-quietly-fixes-charging-issues-with-some-xps-17-9700-laptops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aviancetechnologies.com\/blog\/dell-quietly-fixes-charging-issues-with-some-xps-17-9700-laptops\/","title":{"rendered":"Dell quietly fixes charging issues with some XPS 17 9700 laptops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n[responsivevoice_button rate=&#8221;1\u2033 pitch=&#8221;1.2\u2033 volume=&#8221;0.8\u2033 voice=&#8221;US English Female&#8221; buttontext=&#8221;Story in Audio&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Dell quietly fixes charging issues with some XPS 17 9700 laptops<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"drr-container\" itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p>Dell confirmed that charging issues with some of the company\u2019s new XPS 17 9700 laptops, as well as some of its Precision 5750 corporate laptops, have been identified and fixed.<\/p>\n<p>The problem came to light when Dell XPS 17 9700 review units tested by Notebookcheck.com (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.notebookcheck.net\/2020-Dell-XPS-17-9700-facing-worrying-charging-issues-drops-from-100-percent-to-65-percent-battery-while-plugged-in.480923.0.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">which first reported it<\/a>) and PCWorld exhibited the strange behavior of discharging their battery while plugged in, if the laptop was under heavy load.\u00a0To help diagnose the issue, PCWorld sent its review unit and charger back to Dell for analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Dell confirmed what had been observed, and said it was resolving the matter:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDell has identified an issue on a limited quantity of XPS 17 9700 laptops and Precision 5750 mobile workstations where users may notice their battery depleting at a higher than expected rate under sustained heavy workloads and while connected to AC power,\u201d a Dell spokesman said. \u201cDell has rectified the behavior, and current orders for the products are unaffected. Dell will contact customers with potentially affected systems for resolution. Customers may also contact Dell Technical Support for assistance.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/xps17_xps_power_brick-100851721-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"xps17 xps power brick\" width=\"1200\" height=\"710\" data-imageid=\"100851721\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/xps17_xps_power_brick-100851721-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">IDG<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>PCWorld replicated a reported issue with the XPS 17 9700, where it discharged the battery under heavy load when the laptop was plugged in.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What we don\u2019t know, obviously, is what the fix is yet, and whether it required hardware or firmware. We can say that a recent firmware update to the XPS 15 9500, which never had the XPS 17 9700&#8217;s issue, did appear to update the laptop\u2019s USB Power Delivery circuit. The update affected both the \u201cMain USB PD Controller 2\u201d and \u201cMain USB PD Controller 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/dell_firmware_update-100853287-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"dell firmware update\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" data-imageid=\"100853287\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/dell_firmware_update-100853287-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Gordon Mah Ung<\/small><figcaption>\n<p>The Dell XPS 15 9500 has never exhibited discharge issues, but a recent update to the XPS 15 9500 updated the USB PD charging circuit. It\u2019s not known if that\u2019s part of Dell\u2019s fix for the XPS 17 9700.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Reading between the lines, however, the fix is likely not as simple as firmware.
