But the V2 also ships with a USB soundcard that the headset can plug into, which adds additional filtering capabilities to the headset\u2019s built-in mic. A second, $60 budget option, the Razer BlackShark V2 X, does away with the sound card but provides a similar driver and the same mic as the more expensive version.<\/p>\n<p>Both headsets ship today, though Razer won\u2019t be able to provide the THX spatial-audio profiles until August 6, the company said. On that day, you\u2019ll be able to download specific profiles for eighteen games, such as <em>Valorant,\u00a0Apex Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive<\/em>, and more.<\/p>\n<p>As you might expect, controls for most of the headset\u2019s functions can be adjusted using the Razer Synapse utility software. While we\u2019re not ready to provide a full review, we\u2019ve tried it out enough to provide our early impressions. (Keep in mind that while the BlackShark V2\u2019s 3.5mm jack allows it to be used with phones, Xbox controllers, and more, the pluggable USB soundcard is designed for Windows PCs only.)<\/p>\n<p>Here are the BlackShark V2\u2019s basic specs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Frequency response:<\/strong> 12 Hz \u2013 28 kHz<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impedance:<\/strong> 32 \u2126 @ 1 kHz<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sensitivity (@1 kHz):<\/strong> 100dBSPL\/mW,1KHz<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drivers:<\/strong> Customized Dynamic 50mm Driver<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inner ear cup diameter:<\/strong> 65 x 40 mm \/ 2.56in x 1.57 in<\/li>\n<li><strong>Connection type:<\/strong> 3.5mm with USB sound card<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mic frequency response:<\/strong> 100Hz-10KHz<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mic Signal-to-noise ratio:<\/strong> 60dB (unidirectional)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cable length:<\/strong> 8m \/ 5.91 feet<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weight:<\/strong> 262g \/ 0.6 pounds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My first thoughts when the cans hit my ears were: soft&#8230;and <em>light<\/em>.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"\" class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone tablet desktop\"><\/aside>\n<p>Both headsets are built around what Razer calls an entirely new 50mm TriForce Titanium audio driver, enclosed by what the company also calls an advanced passive noise-cancelling design. In the real world, all that means is that the BlackShark V2 offers a substantial amount of padding to enclose and cradle your ear while blocking out ambient sounds. And it did so, filtering out some of the ambient noise from my office fans, and some of the shrieks as my two young boys rampaged through the house.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/razer-blackshark-v2-sides-100853194-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img class=\"lazy\" alt=\"razer blackshark v2 sides\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" border=\"0\" data-imageid=\"100853194\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/razer-blackshark-v2-sides-100853194-large.jpg\" \/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Mark Hachman \/ IDG<\/small><figcaption>A hardware volume knob button are mounted on the ear cup itself.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My go-to headset is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestbuy.com\/site\/reviews\/hp-omen-with-steelseries-wired-gaming-headset-for-pc-black-red\/5656017\" rel=\"nofollow\">HP Omen-branded headset<\/a> manufactured by Steelseries, which isn\u2019t quite as cozy and offers none of Razer\u2019s audio tricks. Razer\u2019s BlackShark V2 weighs in at 262g (0.6 pound), about half the weight of my existing headset. I\u2019ve never experienced headset fatigue from prolonged use, but lighter weight generally translates into greater comfort. Like most headsets, the BlackShark V2\u2019s mic isn\u2019t retractable and simply needs to be pushed out of the way when not in use.<\/p>\n<p>It took far too long to tune the BlackShark V2 to my preferences, though I was happy with the result. Part of this is simply Razer\u2019s Synapse software, which allows synchronizing the headset with other Razer products; I actually own both a (left-handed!) DeathAdder mouse as well as a BlackWidow keyboard, and I have absolutely no desire to sync all three. The Synapse software has four separate audio tabs: Sound, Mixer, Enhancement, and Mic, with multiple options at each step.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/razer-blackshark-v2-mixer-screen-100853197-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img class=\"lazy\" alt=\"razer blackshark v2 mixer screen\" width=\"1200\" height=\"723\" border=\"0\" data-imageid=\"100853197\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/razer-blackshark-v2-mixer-screen-100853197-large.jpg\" \/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Mark Hachman \/ IDG<\/small><figcaption>Razer\u2019s Synapse software controls the positional sound and other functions.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even worse, the \u201cmaster\u201d volume on the sound tab is apparently independent of the general Windows volume option as well as a dedicated hardware dial on the headset itself. This is only worth mentioning because I was convinced that the BlackShark V2 was underpowered until I found and adjusted all three controls. Did we mention that there are Windows controls for the \u201cRazer USB Sound Card\u201d\u00a0<em>and<\/em> the THX Spatial Audio speakers?<\/p>\n<aside id=\"\" class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-2 tablet desktop smartphone\"><\/aside>\n<p>How did they end up sounding? Very good, in the end. It\u2019s always rewarding to play Fleetwood Mac\u2019s \u201cThe Chain\u201d and discover that yes, John McVie\u2019s bass line does appear in the song. My old-school rock ears lit up when the thudding bass of Queen\u2019s \u201cAnother One Bites the Dust\u201d hit my ears, too. Not surprisingly, there\u2019s a graphics equalizer hidden away within the Synapse software, with a \u201cmusic\u201d preset. I may not have a perfect ear, but the BlackShark delivered good tonality up and down the scale.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m still not a huge fan of the THX enhancement software, though, as the music preset seems to garble it all together more than it helps. That\u2019s\u00a0<em>not<\/em> true of its THX Spatial Audio capabilities, however, as the algorithm and the headset combined seem to position the sound pretty well. (My ears heard the THX \u201chelicopter\u201d circling \u201cabove\u201d my head, though, which may be deliberate.) I didn\u2019t specifically test the positional audio using an evaluation copy of the updated Synapse software against the specific games Razer provided, but it did a decent job of positioning the audio with other games already on my system. Eventually, those profiles will include\u00a0THX Environmental Mode for lifelike sound, or THX Competitive Mode, with more emphasis on spatial awareness and directional cues.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not as impressed with the BlackShark V2\u2019s mic.\u00a0I don\u2019t usually wear a headset or even earbuds during Zoom calls, because the far-field mics on the Microsoft Surface Book 3 2-in-1 seem to capture my voice well. In a quiet office, Microsoft\u2019s mics warmly capture my voice. (I used Windows\u2019 own Voice Recorder to generate test files.)<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/razer-blackshark-v2-mic-synapse-screen-100853205-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img class=\"lazy\" alt=\"razer blackshark v2 mic synapse screen\" width=\"1200\" height=\"733\" border=\"0\" data-imageid=\"100853205\" data-license=\"IDG\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/07\/razer-blackshark-v2-mic-synapse-screen-100853205-large.jpg\" \/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Mark Hachman \/ IDG<\/small><figcaption>Razer provides numerous options for tuning the BlackShark V2\u2019s mic.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The BlackShark V2 can\u2019t quite manage it. Even playing with the numerous options the sound card enables, from volume normalization to a \u201cvocal clarity\u201d setting that enhances the frequencies your voice uses, I was never able to quite reproduce what the Book 3\u00a0<em>or<\/em> the SteelSeries headset delivered. There\u2019s even a mic equalizer, though (with \u201cbroadcast\u201d and \u201cconferencing\u201d presets), so some more fine-tuning may have been necessary.<\/p>\n<p>The V2, though, does an excellent job of filtering out unwanted noise. Even during basic tests, such as placing a smart speaker around to the side and behind me, I was able to speak and be heard quite clearly, with just faint background noise. I don\u2019t have many other headsets to compare it to, but I was more than pleased with the BlackShark V2 in this regard.<\/p>\n<p>Does the BlackShark V2 offer gamers \u201can unfair advantage,\u201d enabling them to hear their enemies coming from miles away? I can\u2019t say for certain. In the run-and-gun environment of <em>Apex Legends<\/em>, audio cues may not be as critical as, say, <em>Player Unknown\u2019s Battlegrounds.<\/em>\u00a0My early impressions tell me that you may want to lean toward the V2X instead.<\/p>\n<div class=\"end-note\">\n<p><!-- blx4 #2008 blox4.html --><\/p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"blx blxParticleendnote blxM2008 blox4_html blxC24068\">Note: When you purchase something after clicking links in our articles, we may earn a small commission.
