Apparently we were wrong, but there\u2019s no question the level of fidelity and sheer <em>density<\/em> of the game will make your graphics card sweat\u2014especially because it\u2019ll be a ray-tracing flagship.<\/p>\n<p>On that note, while today\u2019s hotly anticipated <em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em> gameplay reveal felt pretty underwhelming after the stunning previews, Nvidia sent out more details on the ray tracing tech integrated into the game. It\u2019s enough to stoke our excitement yet again.<\/p>\n<p>We already knew <em>Cyberpunk<\/em> would have ray tracing, but without details about the specific effects. Today, Nvidia took off those wraps. While most games aside from <em>Control<\/em> support just one or two real-time ray tracing effects, <em>Cyberpunk 2077 <\/em>will integrate four different features into the game, as well as the faster, better DLSS 2.0 technology that can help reclaim frames lost to the strenuous lighting effects.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ixl31324UxE\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Here are the ray tracing effects you\u2019ll find in <em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em>, quoted verbatim from a release sent to me by Nvidia PR. (The screenshots and video in this article all show ray tracing in action in <em>Cyberpunk<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u201cRay-traced ambient occlusion\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; Ambient occlusion is a shading and rendering technique used to calculate how exposed each point in a scene is to ambient lighting. The result is a diffuse shading effect that darkens enclosed and sheltered areas and enhances the rendered image\u2019s overall tone. In\u00a0<em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em>, ray-traced ambient occlusion additionally can be used with local lights to approximate local shadowing effects where shadows are missing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ray-traced diffuse illumination<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; This technique is used to capture sky radiance as well as emissive lighting from various surfaces, which is difficult to achieve with traditional rendering techniques.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ray-traced reflections<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; In\u00a0<em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em>, ray-traced reflections are used on all surfaces and can trace ranges for up to several kilometers. They are present on both opaque and transparent objects to simulate the way light reflects from glossy and metal surfaces by tracing a single bounce of reflection rays against the scene. This includes smooth natural mirrors like window glass, but also rougher surfaces like brushed metal. Unlike screen space techniques which can only reflect what\u2019s on screen, ray-traced reflections incorporate the entire scene around the character, and can accurately represent objects outside the camera view or facing away from the camera.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ray-traced shadows<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em>\u00a0preview supports directional shadows from the sun and the moon. These shadows aim to be physically accurate and even account for light scattering from clouds. Shadows may be enhanced in the final release to support other types of light sources where it is needed.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Better yet, these are all expected to be available in the game on day one, along with DLSS 2.0. Most supporting games have added ray tracing as a later update to the game. \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/06\/cyberpunk2077_june-2020-nvidia_exclusive1-618525ef4f04f3a3b82.58766099-100850158-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"cyberpunk2077 june 2020 nvidia exclusive1 618525ef4f04f3a3b82.58766099\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-imageid=\"100850158\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/06\/cyberpunk2077_june-2020-nvidia_exclusive1-618525ef4f04f3a3b82.58766099-100850158-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Nvidia<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>You\u2019ll need a graphics card capable of real-time ray tracing to tap into those effects, of course. Right now, only Nvidia\u2019s GeForce RTX 20-series GPUs support the cutting-edge technology. They\u2019re killer, but if you\u2019re planning to upgrade your system for <em>Cyberpunk<\/em>\u2014we\u2019ve heard from dozens of people with that very intention\u2014it\u2019s a bad time to buy a high-end graphics card right now.\u00a0Better options should be available by the time <em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em> rolls out on November 19.<\/p>\n<p>AMD\u2019s potent next-gen \u201cBig Navi\u201d cards will include ray tracing and are expected to launch sometime before the Xbox Series X (read: November). Nvidia hasn\u2019t said anything about a GeForce refresh, but it\u2019s already revealed its next-gen Ampere GPU in data center form. Endless leaks and rumors point to a late summer or early fall launch for new GeForce cards.<\/p>\n<p>The RTX 20-series will be two years old in August, so the timing checks out. Ampere leaps forward to a smaller process node, which usually results in significant performance and efficiency increases. The rumored GeForce RTX 30-series are expected to amp up ray tracing performance by a sizeable amount.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone tablet desktop\" id=\"\"\/>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/06\/cyberpunk2077_june-2020-nvidia_exclusive6-618525ef4f063d71967.42568490-100850163-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"cyberpunk2077 june 2020 nvidia exclusive6 618525ef4f063d71967.42568490\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-imageid=\"100850163\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/06\/cyberpunk2077_june-2020-nvidia_exclusive6-618525ef4f063d71967.42568490-100850163-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Nvidia<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>Always take rumors with a big pinch of salt, but if you\u2019re going to splurge on a pricey new graphics card to see <em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em> in all its ray traced glory, consider sitting tight for a few months. Yes, the GeForce RTX 2080 Super is amazing, but you don\u2019t want buyer\u2019s remorse on an $800 purchase.<\/p>\n<p>(Unless you manage to win one of\u00a0Nvidia&#8217;s ultra-rare GeForce RTX 2080 Ti <em>Cyberpunk 2077<\/em> Edition graphics cards, that is.
