Data caps, an annoyance in the best of times, suddenly can mean paying additional fees if a family sheltering in place goes over their limit.<\/p>\n<p>Think of it: you&#8217;re working from home, videoconferencing over Skype or Zoom, while your kids are playing games and chatting with friends. There&#8217;s streamed movies to watch in the evenings. Disney+ and Netflix may be in constant rotation, adding to the bandwidth strain. That&#8217;s a lot of data!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response, some ISPs and cellular service providers are providing relief for customers. Some are merely adhering to the FCC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DOC-363033A1.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\">Keep Americans Connected Pledge<\/a>\u00a0(PDF), which asks the signees not to terminate a customer\u2019s service for non-payment. Others are removing data caps and lowering bills in response to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>And others, as you will see in our list below, are doing nothing at all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">AT&amp;T<\/h3>\n<p>All AT&amp;T home Internet Wireline customers, as well as Fixed Wireless Internet customers, can use unlimited data. AT&amp;T will continue to offer $10\/mo Access from AT&amp;T service for qualifying customers. AT&amp;T Prepaid has also <a href=\"https:\/\/about.att.com\/newsroom\/2020\/covid_19_att_prepaid.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">added<\/a> a new $15\/mo offer for 2GB of data.<\/p>\n<p>For the next 60 days, AT&amp;T also <a href=\"https:\/\/about.att.com\/pages\/COVID-19.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">pledged<\/a> not to terminate the service of any customer who can\u2019t pay their bill, and will waive the fees associated with late payments. (Waivers can be applied for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.att.com\/help\/covid-19\/waive-overage-fee\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.)\u00a0 It will also waive domestic postpaid wireless plan overage charges for data, voice or text for residential or small business wireless customers.\u00a0AT&amp;T will keep its public Wi-Fi hotspots open to everyone, and has automatically increased hotspot data by 15GB per month per line.<\/p>\n<p>Effective April 8, AT&amp;T waived Guam-based international roaming charges for AT&amp;T Mobility accounts through April 30 and retroactively to April 1. New AT&amp;T TV\/DirectTV customers will receive a free year of HBO. An AT&amp;T &#8220;Summer Camp&#8221; collection of content <a href=\"https:\/\/about.att.com\/pages\/COVID-19.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">has been added<\/a>, and AT&amp;T also added a number of free channels to those customers who didn&#8217;t already have them.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">CenturyLink\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>For the next 60 days, CenturyLink said it has committed to waive late fees and to not terminate a residential or small business customer\u2019s service due to financial circumstances associated with COVID-19. The company is also suspending data usage limits for consumer customers during this time period due to COVID-19. It has committed to the FCC&#8217;s Keeping Americans Connected Pledge.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone tablet desktop\" id=\"\"\/>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Consolidated Communications<\/h3>\n<p>Consolidated has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consolidated.com\/support\/alerts\/coronavirus-updates\" rel=\"nofollow\">posted<\/a> a coronavirus response page that doesn\u2019t go beyond a statement to \u201cfocus on ensuring stability of services and network performance for our customers.\u201d Customers will receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consolidated.com\/blog\/residential\/artmid\/7943\/articleid\/168\/consolidated-communications-cable-offers-extra-channels-free-for-a-limited-time\" rel=\"nofollow\">additional free channels<\/a> &#8220;through April or the end of May at the latest.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Comcast<\/h3>\n<p>On March 13, <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.comcast.com\/covid-19\" rel=\"nofollow\">Comcast said<\/a> that it would pause enforcement of its data caps for 60 days, essentially giving all of its customers unlimited data for that period. (Comcast normally gives its Xfinity customers two \u201cgrace\u201d months for every 12, allowing them to exceed their data cap without penalty.) New subscribers to Comcast\u2019s $9.95\/month Internet Essentials plan will receive two months free, and speeds were increased to 25Mbps down and 3Mbps up. Comcast<a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.comcast.com\/press\/releases\/comcast-extends-free-internet-service-new-internet-essentials-customers\" rel=\"nofollow\"> said on June 19<\/a> that the &#8220;two months free&#8221; introductory offer for Internet Essentials will be extended through the rest of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Comcast is also making its Xfinity WiFi service free for everyone, regardless of whether you\u2019re a Comcast subscriber or not. (Here\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xfinity.com\/wifi\" rel=\"nofollow\">map of Xfinity WiFi hotspots<\/a>.)\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Cox<\/h3>\n<p>Cox <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.cox.com\/Cox_expands_coronavirus_relief_for_remote_workers_and_students?_ga=2.159987134.24736608.1584401944-1472321657.1584401944\" rel=\"nofollow\">said on March 16<\/a> that it is eliminating data usage overages for the next 60 days. Customers with a 500GB or existing Unlimited plan will receive credits. New subscribers to the Cox Starter Internet plan will be able to sign up without an annual contract and receive 50Mbps download speeds.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-2 tablet desktop smartphone\" id=\"\"\/>\n<p>Cox previously said that it would not terminate service for any residential or small business customers, and would open its Cox WiFi hotspot network to keep the public connected. That will be extended <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.cox.com\/Cox-extends-FCC-pledge-and-Coronavirus-relief-offerings\" rel=\"nofollow\">through June 30<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cox is offering free support calls and the first month free to its low-cost Internet service, Connect2Compete. (It will be free through July 15, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.cox.com\/2020-04-17-Cox-Communications-Extends-Coronavirus-Response-Offer-for-Connect2Compete-with-Free-Service-for-Students-until-July-15-Nationwide\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cox added<\/a>.) Customers on its Essential plan will see their speeds increased from 30Mbps to 50Mbps, and\u00a0Starter, StraightUp Internet and Connect2Compete packages will be automatically upgraded to speeds of 50 Mbps as well.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Charter (Spectrum)<\/h3>\n<p>Charter Communications\u2019 Spectrum services do not have data caps, and will not terminate service for home or small business users who can&#8217;t pay because of the coronavirus pandemic.<a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.charter.com\/newsroom\/charter-to-offer-free-access-to-spectrum-broadband-and-wifi-for-60-days-for-new-K12-and-college-student-households-and-more\" rel=\"nofollow\"> Charter said<\/a> that it will offer free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi for 60 days if that household has K-12 students or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription. (That <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.charter.com\/newsroom\/charter-extends-free-60-day-spectrum-broadband-internet-and-wifi-offer-through-june-30\" rel=\"nofollow\">offer was extended<\/a> until April 30. ) Charter also said it will open its Wi-Fi hotspots for public use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This week, Charter also said that Spectrum TV customers will be given free Showtime and EPIX through Sunday, April 19. They&#8217;ll also be given\u00a0\u00a0Disney Junior, Disney XD, Game Show Network and UPtv through May. All of Charter\u2019s existing HBO subscribers, including subscribers in its Spectrum Silver and Gold video packages, will automatically be given access to HBO Max for no additional charge.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Earthlink<\/h3>\n<p>Earthlink is also participating in the\u00a0Keep Americans Connected Pledge, and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthlink.net\/keepamericansconnected-old\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">pledged<\/a> (as of March 16, 2020) to\u00a0not terminate the service of any residential or small business customer because of their inability to pay their bill due to disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, as well as not charge late payment fees a residential or small business customer may incur because of economic hardship related to the coronavirus pandemic. (That page has disappeared as of June 19.)<\/p>\n<p>Earthlink does not offer data caps on its residential service.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Frontier Communications<\/h3>\n<p>Frontier does not have data caps, and this will continue through the COVID-19 pandemic, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontierbundles.com\/blog\/covid-19-what-frontier-is-doing-to-support-customers\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a>. It also plans to increase its capacity.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\"><strong>Google<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Google Fi has joined the\u00a0<a href=\"ttps:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/keep-americans-connected\" rel=\"nofollow\">Keep Americans Connected Pledge<\/a>,&#8221; according to a company spokesman, who has not said to which date it will be effective.\u00a0Google Fi is also <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/fi\/answer\/9808823?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow\">temporarily increasing its limits<\/a> for full speed data to 30GB per user, for both Flexible and Unlimited Plans as of April 1. After the 30GB limit is reached, a user can pay $10\/GB to return to full-speed data for the remainder of the billing cycle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Google is also extending its billing grace period to 60 days beyond the billing date, effective March 1.\u00a0 All of these measures are effective as of May 1, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/fi\/answer\/9808823?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow\">Google said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Mediacom Communications<\/h3>\n<p>Mediacom has paused monthly data allowances through June 30 across all broadband service tiers, it <a href=\"https:\/\/mediacomcable.com\/about\/news\/mediacom-extends-coronavirus-company-initiatives\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">said on April 30<\/a>. New customers who sign up for\u00a0Mediacom\u2019s Access Internet 60 broadband service can do so for $19.99\/mo for 12 months, rather than $29.99\/mo. Mediacom\u2019s Connect2Compete service is raising its speeds from 10Mbps down\/1Mbps up to 25Mbps down\/3Mbps up, and it will be free for the first 60 days. It has also made its Wi-Fi hotspot network publicly accessible, for free, for 60 days.<\/p>\n<p>Through June 30, Mediacom will not disconnect service or assess late fees to any customer who calls and informs the company that they cannot pay their bill.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Sparklight (formerly Cable One)<\/h3>\n<p>Sparklight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sparklight.com\/press\/Pages\/Sparklight-Makes-Unlimited-Data-Available-on-All-Internet-Plans-Waives-Late-Fees-During-Coronavirus-Crisis.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow\">said on March 13<\/a> that it would make unlimited data available on all Internet plans for 30 days, while waiving late fees for 60 days. Customers who call the company can also negotiate deferrals of their payments. On March 16, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sparklight.com\/press\/Pages\/Sparklight-Opens-WiFi-Hotspots-to-Assist-Communities-During-Coronavirus-(COVID-19)-Crisis.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a>\u00a0it would make its hotspots, accessible in its office parking lots, available for free public use, and added a \u00a0a 15 Mbps internet plan for $10 per month for the next 60 days. On April 28, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sparklight.com\/news\/sparklight-extends-covid-19-response-efforts\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a> that it would extend this through June 30.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Sparklight extended unlimited data through May 12.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Sprint<\/h3>\n<p>(As of April 1, Sprint has <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.sprint.com\/tmobile-completes-merger-with-sprint.htm\" rel=\"nofollow\">completed its merger<\/a> with T-Mobile.)<\/p>\n<p>Sprint said on March 13 that it has extended its network to include T-Mobile\u2019s network as well for the next 60 days. Sprint has also signed the Keep Americans Connected Pledge and will waive fees and not terminate services if customers are unable to pay because of the coronavirus for the next 60 days. Customers with metered data plans will now receive unlimited data for 60 days. They will also receive an additional 20GB of hotspot data for the same period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Customers will be able to place free international calls to CDC-designated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/travelers\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">Level 3<\/a> countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wireless broadband ISP Starry has made Starry Connect, a broadband program for public and affordable housing owners, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lightreading.com\/services\/starry-offers-free-service-to-connect-subs-through-end-of-may-\/d\/d-id\/758257\" rel=\"nofollow\">free through May<\/a>. Normally, the program, which provides 30Mbps symmetrical speeds, is $15\/mo. Starry has also agreed to suspend cancellation of service due to nonpayment due to the coronavirus. It already does not charge additional fees or late fees. Starry&#8217;s service does not include data caps, either.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">TDS<\/h3>\n<p>TDS <a href=\"https:\/\/tdstelecom.com\/about\/news\/categories\/tds\/TDSAnnouncesFreeBroadband.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">said on March 16<\/a> that it will be providing free broadband access to customer households with K-12 or college students. (Proof will be required.) Other than that, TDS is adhering to the FCC\u2019s \u201cKeep Americans Connected\u201d pledge only by agreeing not to disconnect customers who can\u2019t pay their bills for the next 60 days, <a href=\"https:\/\/tdstelecom.com\/about\/news\/categories\/tds\/COVID-19_Customer_Update.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">through June 30<\/a>. TDS has also opened its Wi-Fi hotspots for the next 60 days to the public, for free.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">T-Mobile<\/h3>\n<p>All current T-Mobile plans with data will be granted free unlimited data through June 30, excluding roaming.\u00a0T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile customers will be given an additional 20GB of mobile hotspot and tethering services through June 30 as well. Lifeline customers will be given an extra 5GB of data per month for the next two months.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not have an offer available for 60 days of free service and encourage consumers to be cautious of social media posts that may include fraudulent numbers,\u201d T-Mobile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.t-mobile.com\/news\/t-mobile-update-on-covid-19-response?icid=MGPO_TMO_U_CUSTSUPT_Z2739VFSHS97O7KGF20085\" rel=\"nofollow\">added<\/a>. The company has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.t-mobile.com\/news\/how-to-protect-yourself-and-loved-ones-from-covid-19-phone-scams\" rel=\"nofollow\">posted resources<\/a> to help protect customers from scammers.<\/p>\n<p>T-Mobile is extending its commitment to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fcc.gov%2Fdocument%2Fchairman-pai-launches-keep-americans-connected-pledge&amp;data=02%7C01%7CPaula.Jacinto2%40T-Mobile.com%7Ccee96a306482483eae3f08d7eb12a2ca%7Cbe0f980bdd994b19bd7bbc71a09b026c%7C0%7C0%7C637236337576025680&amp;sdata=jam66ZNuuH0atQ5T0COq63GB32rzp%2Fu92PjmkN5DDfU%3D&amp;reserved=0\" rel=\"nofollow\" aria-label=\"To make this website accessible to screen reader, Press combination of alt and 1 keys. To stop getting this message, press the combination of alt and 2 keys\">FCC pledge<\/a>\u00a0through June 30, continuing to offer support for postpaid wireless, residential and small business customers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Verizon<\/h3>\n<p>Verizon will waive late fees and keep residential and small business customers connected if negatively impacted by the global crisis, the company said on March 13. Verizon now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/about\/news\/covid-response-customers\" rel=\"nofollow\">says<\/a>\u00a0on a new, consolidated COVID-19 response page that that its waiver plan will run until June 30, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/about\/news\/update-verizon-serve-customers-covid-19\" rel=\"nofollow\">it added<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Verizon is\u00a0also upgrading the data plan on its Verizon Innovative Learning program for Title 1 middle schools from 10GB\/month to 30GB\/month for the next two months, effective March 16. There are no data caps on Verizon home Internet subscribers, a company representative said.<\/p>\n<p>On March 23, Verizon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/about\/news\/verizon-helps-eliminate-worry\" rel=\"nofollow\">updated<\/a> its coronavirus relief plans, noting that it will waive overage charges, upgrade fees and activation fees. Verizon has also pledged to not terminate service and waive late fees. Verizon is also adding 15GB of 4G LTE data to consumer and small business plans for free, and adding some free overseas calls to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verizonwireless.com\/support\/covid-19-level-3-countries\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">some countries<\/a>. Verizon will waive the next two months of billing cycles on its Lifeline plan. On April 3, Verizon will launch a new broadband discount program; customers may select any Verizon Fios speed in its Mix &amp; Match plans and receive a $20 discount per month.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"body\">Windstream (Kinetic)<\/h3>\n<p>Windstream has not <a href=\"https:\/\/news.windstream.com\/news\/default.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced<\/a> any relief for customers affected by the coronavirus.
