Gone are the days where developers could stretch new textures over old games and call it a day. These days it\u2019s all about remakes, raiding the late \u201890s and early \u201800s for games that need more than just a new coat of paint.<\/p>\n<p><em>Resident Evil 2<\/em> set the bar pretty damn high, allowing old fans to relive a beloved game the way they <em>remembered<\/em> it, while also creating a thoroughly modern horror game for newcomers. It\u2019s not on PC (yet), but by all accounts Square\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playstation.com\/en-us\/games\/final-fantasy-vii-remake-ps4\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Final Fantasy VII Remake<\/a><\/em> does the same. Activision created slightly more faithful remakes with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/996580\/Spyro_Reignited_Trilogy\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Spyro<\/a> <\/em>and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/731490\/Crash_Bandicoot_N_Sane_Trilogy\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Crash Bandicoot<\/a>, <\/em>and is doing the same with the upcoming <em>Tony Hawk 1+2<\/em>. The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/362890\/Black_Mesa\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Black Mesa Project<\/a><\/em> injected new life into <em>Half-Life<\/em>. 2K\u2019s releasing a <em>Mafia<\/em> remake this summer.<\/p>\n<p>Who\u2019s next? What other games should get the <em>Resident Evil 2<\/em> treatment? We\u2019ve put together a list\u2014not just games that <em>deserve<\/em> a remake, not just games that would <em>benefit<\/em> from a remake, but ones where a remake seems actually feasible. And yes, that means you\u2019ll find few games the size of <em>Final Fantasy VII<\/em> on this list, because I think even Square underestimated the scope of that undertaking at the outset. That means that as much as I\u2019d love to see a <em>Fallout 2<\/em> or <em>Knights of the Old Republic<\/em> or even a <em>Longest Journey <\/em>remake\u2026well, I\u2019m not holding my breath.<\/p>\n<h2>Tomb Raider<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/tomb-raider-100842817-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"tomb raider\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-imageid=\"100842817\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/tomb-raider-100842817-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Square Enix<\/small><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/224960\/Tomb_Raider_I\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tomb Raider<\/a><\/em> actually seems one of the most likely candidates for a remake. The reboot trilogy, begun in 2013, culminated in a post-credits sequence that <em>strongly<\/em> hinted at a remake\u2019s existence\u2014at least originally.<\/p>\n<p>Patched out at release, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/m9rGxNQvI0A\" rel=\"nofollow\">the original ending<\/a> showed off Lara Croft\u2019s dual pistols and a letter from Jacqueline Natla, antagonist of the original<em> Tomb Raider<\/em>. These details were removed by the day one patch, perhaps to prevent speculation about this very remake. And yet\u2026what if? It\u2019d certainly make sense, after three games spent \u201cbecoming\u201d the Tomb Raider, if Crystal Dynamics or Eidos rolled straight into remaking Lara Croft\u2019s earliest adventures.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this would also be the <em>second<\/em> such remake, as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/8000\/Tomb_Raider_Anniversary\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tomb Raider: Anniversary<\/a><\/em> already served the same purpose back in 2007.<\/p>\n<h2>Devil May Cry<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/devil-may-cry-100842810-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"devil may cry\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-imageid=\"100842810\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/devil-may-cry-100842810-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Capcom<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>Terrible cameras are the downfall of so many games from this era. <em>Devil May Cry<\/em> is one of them. After <em>Devil May Cry 5 last year<\/em> I tried for the third or fourth time to go back to the beginning of the series and\u2026I just can\u2019t. Fixed camera angles are a nightmare and I\u2019m glad we\u2019ve left them behind.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019d love to see Capcom take the same tack with <em>Devil May Cry<\/em> as it has with <em>Resident Evil<\/em>. Give me those early stories running in the RE Engine, with modern combos and modern voice acting and (most importantly) a modern camera, and I\u2019d be happy to give the series a second shot. I think I finally understand why people love the series, but even 2018\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/631510\/Devil_May_Cry_HD_Collection\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Devil May Cry HD Collection<\/a><\/em> isn\u2019t enough to get me to suffer through that first game in its current incarnation.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-1 smartphone tablet desktop\" id=\"\"\/>\n<h2>Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/splinter-cell-chaos-theory-100842816-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"splinter cell chaos theory\" width=\"1200\" height=\"782\" data-imageid=\"100842816\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/splinter-cell-chaos-theory-100842816-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Ubisoft<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>People have called for a <em>Splinter Cell <\/em>reboot for years now, but how do you reboot <em>Splinter Cell <\/em>in the modern era? People haven\u2019t seemed happy with the past few entries. Maybe it\u2019s time to cram Sam Fisher back into his form-fitting suit and remake the most popular entry in the series.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/13570\/Tom_Clancys_Splinter_Cell_Chaos_Theory\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chaos Theory<\/a><\/em> was the peak of the original <em>Splinter Cell <\/em>formula, with a focus on getting through levels undetected, hiding in the shadows more than shooting. Starting with the 2006 sequel <em>Double Agent<\/em>, <em>Splinter Cell<\/em> moved more towards action and never really found its way back. <em>Chaos Theory<\/em>\u2019s plot is the usual Tom Clancy-inspired thriller nonsense, so you could theoretically get away with reviving the <em>Chaos Theory<\/em> style with none of the finer details. Many of <em>Chaos Theory<\/em>\u2019s levels are triumphs of stealth design though, including the bank and the bathhouse. Maybe a hybrid remake-reboot, like last year\u2019s <em>Call of Duty: Modern Warfare<\/em>?<\/p>\n<h2>Silent Hill 2<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"large\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wh6LhkA3698\" width=\"1134\" height=\"638\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><em>Silent Hill 2<\/em> is lauded as one of horror gaming\u2019s high-water marks\u2014mostly by people who played it circa 2001. Horror games age particularly poorly though, because their impact often relies on the player \u201cbuying in,\u201d so to speak. <em>Silent Hill 2<\/em>\u2019s story is as layered and grim as ever, but it\u2019s a bit hard to appreciate shackled to its original environs and stilted animations.<\/p>\n<p><em>Resident Evil 2<\/em> is proof horror games of the era can be resurrected though, and <em>Silent Hill<\/em> started as little more than a <em>Resident Evil<\/em> clone. Go ahead Konami, \u201cborrow\u201d the idea of a remake. Or do literally anything with <em>Silent Hill, <\/em>please. It deserves the same love as its Capcom counterpart.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"nativo-promo nativo-promo-2 tablet desktop smartphone\" id=\"\"\/>\n<h2>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/prince-of-persia-100842814-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"prince of persia\" width=\"1200\" height=\"799\" data-imageid=\"100842814\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/prince-of-persia-100842814-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Ubisoft<\/small><\/figure>\n<p><em>Prince of Persia<\/em> essentially died when <em>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/em> took off, but <em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/13600\/Prince_of_Persia_The_Sands_of_Time\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sands of Time<\/a><\/em> deserves love. It\u2019s still the high point of the series, with its ruined palace host to plenty of iconic moments that are ripe for reimagining. The storybook framing is still surprisingly unique as well, with the prince\u2019s \u201cNo, that\u2019s not how it happened\u201d admonition upon death lending the experience a <em>Princess Bride<\/em> vibe.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge would be making climbing-around-an-environment interesting again. Novel during the <em>Prince of Persia<\/em> era, we\u2019ve had more than enough of it between <em>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/em> and <em>Uncharted<\/em> and the <em>Tomb Raider<\/em> reboots. <em>Prince of Persia<\/em>\u2019s climbing was always more puzzle-like, but still, it\u2019s been done.<\/p>\n<p>And uh, forget the sequels. <em>The Sands of Time<\/em> is great but the nu-metal inspired <em>Warrior Within<\/em> was bad at the time and worse now.<\/p>\n<h2>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/assassins-creed-100842809-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"assassins creed\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-imageid=\"100842809\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/assassins-creed-100842809-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Ubisoft<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking of <em>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/em>, it\u2019d be interesting to see the start of the series remade. The proof of concept for a series that\u2019s now lasted over a decade, the original <em>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/em> is an anomaly now. Stealth-focused, with a surprising amount of time spent sitting on benches, it\u2019s almost unrecognizable in the <em>Origins<\/em> and <em>Odyssey <\/em>era. Hell, <em>Assassin\u2019s Creed II<\/em> was already markedly different (and better) than the original.<\/p>\n<p>Given the series is ongoing though, and given the import the original game still has to the overarching story (if you\u2019re one of the people who care), it\u2019d be interesting to see a modern take. Jerusalem during the Third Crusade is a rich setting, and an <em>Origins<\/em>-sized remake of Altair\u2019s journey could be fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, I\u2019m not saying this one\u2019s as likely as some others on the list. But hey, the first <em>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/em> is 13 years old now and still the foundation of one of today\u2019s biggest series. At some point Ubisoft needs to either revive the originals or just let all the modern-day trappings die. Otherwise, who\u2019s even going to remember Desmond Miles?<\/p>\n<h2>Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/legacy-of-kain-soul-reaver-100842808-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"legacy of kain soul reaver\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" data-imageid=\"100842808\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/legacy-of-kain-soul-reaver-100842808-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Square Enix<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>These days Amy Hennig is probably best known for <em>Uncharted, <\/em>but before that was <em>Legacy of Kain.<\/em> Given that most games in the series end on cliffhangers, it\u2019s hard to single any of them out for a remake. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/224920\/Legacy_of_Kain_Soul_Reaver\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Soul Reaver<\/a><\/em> remains the most popular though, and I imagine a full-fledged remake could probably work through the content of both <em>Soul Reaver<\/em> and its sequel in a single game nowadays.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably not high on Square\u2019s priority list. Crystal Dynamics and Eidos are pretty damn busy these days, and <em>Tomb Raider<\/em> gets the lion share of attention. <em>Soul Reaver<\/em> remains a cult classic though, with a story that seems sophisticated even now, let alone by the standards of its day. I\u2019d love to see a modern take. Or hell, I\u2019d be happy with a remaster.<\/p>\n<h2>Max Payne<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/max-payne-100842813-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"max payne\" width=\"1200\" height=\"796\" data-imageid=\"100842813\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/max-payne-100842813-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Remedy<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>Listen, I\u2019d rather Remedy keep making weird games. Let them work on <em>Control<\/em> and whatever the hell else they want to make. Don\u2019t saddle them with a remake.<\/p>\n<p>That said, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/12140\/Max_Payne\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Max Payne<\/a><\/em> is an incredible shooter with a surreal story that holds up surprisingly well, and <em>someone<\/em> should work on a remake. Who? I have no idea, but the series is owned by Take-Two, and the impending <em>Mafia<\/em> remake indicates that someone over there is at least aware of this trend, so\u2026give it to someone. Stick Sam Lake\u2019s face onto a new body, pull the big \u201cBullet Time\u201d lever, and it\u2019ll be just in time for <em>The Matrix<\/em> to come back in style.<\/p>\n<h2>Medal of Honor: Allied Assault<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/medal-of-honor-100842812-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"medal of honor\" width=\"1200\" height=\"791\" data-imageid=\"100842812\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/medal-of-honor-100842812-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Respawn<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>Respawn is reviving the <em>Medal of Honor<\/em> name with the VR-exclusive <em>Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond<\/em> later this year. Maybe it\u2019ll be good.<\/p>\n<p>But I\u2019d love to see a modern take on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gog.com\/game\/medal_of_honor_allied_assault_war_chest\" rel=\"nofollow\">Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and its Spearhead expansion<\/a><\/em>. While I admire that <em>Battlefield V <\/em>tried to focus on lesser-known stories of World War II, both in an effort to broaden people\u2019s understanding of the conflict and to alleviate the \u201cOh, another World War II shooter\u201d fatigue\u2026well, I\u2019ve got a soft spot for my <em>Band of Brothers <\/em>and <em>Saving Private Ryan <\/em>remakes.<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Medal of Honor <\/em>canon, that was <em>Allied Assault <\/em>and <em>Spearhead. <\/em>Give me that fake Tom Hanks leading me up Omaha Beach. Give me Normandy hedgerows and the chilly foxholes of Bastogne. And then give it to me with all the bells and whistles that EA\u2019s modern Frostbite engine can offer, because actual <em>Allied Assault<\/em> has not aged very well.<\/p>\n<h2>Riven<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/riven-100842815-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"riven\" width=\"1200\" height=\"774\" data-imageid=\"100842815\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/riven-100842815-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Cyan Worlds<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>Cyan has remade <em>Myst<\/em> three times, with <em>realMyst<\/em>, <em>Myst: Masterpiece Edition<\/em>, and <em>realMyst: Masterpiece Edition<\/em>. It has never remade <em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/63610\/Riven_The_Sequel_to_MYST\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Riven<\/a><\/em>, despite <em>Riven<\/em> being the superior game.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps we\u2019ll never see a truly official <em>Riven <\/em>remake. I know in the past Cyan has said that <em>Riven <\/em>is simply too large to get the <em>realMyst<\/em> treatment in full 3D. There\u2019s hope though. For years, a group of fans called the Starry Expanse Project has worked to convert <em>Riven <\/em>to Unreal 4 with Cyan\u2019s blessing. Last year they finally got more than a blessing, with Cyan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.starryexpanse.com\/2019\/08\/15\/mysterium-2019-a-very-special-announcement\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">agreeing to support the project<\/a> in a semi-official capacity. That doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s coming soon, but <em>Riven<\/em> seems like a definite checkmark for the remake column\u2026someday.<\/p>\n<h2>Beyond Good &amp; Evil<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"large \"><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/beyond-good-and-evil-100842806-orig.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img border=\"0\" alt=\"beyond good and evil\" width=\"1200\" height=\"722\" data-imageid=\"100842806\" data-license=\"Supplied Art\" data-original=\"https:\/\/images.idgesg.net\/images\/article\/2020\/05\/beyond-good-and-evil-100842806-large.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a> <small class=\"credit\">Beyond Good &amp; Evil<\/small><\/figure>\n<p>So far, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/beyondgoodandevil.ubisoft.com\/en-us\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Beyond Good &amp; Evil 2<\/a><\/em> seems to exist as nothing more than tech demos and dreams. Theoretically Ubisoft will one day publish the long-awaited sequel though, and when it does I hope <em>Beyond Good &amp; Evil<\/em> arrives alongside. It\u2019s still so charming, one of the best examples of the point-and-click adventure style transposed into full 3D, with a focus on puzzles and exploration and photography instead of combat.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/15130\/Beyond_Good_and_Evil\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Beyond Good &amp; Evil<\/a> <\/em>is still perfectly playable nowadays, but with plenty of early 3D era jank that detracts from the overall experience. You can also tell Michel Ancel\u2019s ambitions were limited by the tech of the time\u2014a sentiment that\u2019s even clearer after watching the <em>Beyond Good &amp; Evil 2<\/em> teasers.
